Poetry, Prose, and the Politics of Spirituality Program Overview
A collaboration between Fort Lewis College and Global Learning Across Borders
Join acclaimed authors Kate Niles and Pam Uschuk for an amazing Innovative Month for May 2007 (first summer session). The first ten days of the course will be spent in the classroom, learning about the Indian and Tibetan poetic traditions and writing our own poetry and lyric prose. We will then journey first to New Delhi, visiting Sampark Press and interviewing a few Indian women poets as well as the editor and publisher, Sunandan Chowdury Roy, an expert in Indian women's poetry. Then we will go to Dharamsala and Ladakh to visit Buddhist monasteries, exiled Tibetan monks & nuns, and discuss sacred Buddhist poetry and its long term effects on Tibet before its invasion and takeover by China. A service component where students spend a day teaching English to local children will be included, as will many other activities.
